Abstract: Computational Photography is an emerging multi-disciplinary field that is at the intersection of optics, signal processing, computer graphics+vision, electronics, art, and online sharing in social networks. The field is evolving through three phases. The first phase was about building a super-camera that has enhanced performance in terms of the traditional parameters, such as dynamic range, field of view or depth of field. I call this Epsilon Photography. Due to limited capabilities of a camera, the scene is sampled via multiple photos, each captured by epsilon variation of the camera parameters. It corresponds to the low-level vision: estimating pixels and pixel features. The second phase is building tools that go beyond capabilities of this super-camera. I call this Coded Photography. The goal here is to reversibly encode information about the scene in a single photograph (or
a very few photographs) so that the corresponding decoding allows
powerful decomposition of the image into light fields, motion deblurred images, global/direct illumination components or distinction between geometric versus material discontinuities. This corresponds to the mid-level vision: segmentation, organization, inferring shapes, materials and edges. The third phase will be about going beyond the radiometric quantities and challenging the notion that a camera should mimic a single-chambered human eye. Instead of recovering physical parameters, the goal will be to capture the visual essence of the scene and analyze the perceptually critical components. I call this Essence
Photography and it may loosely resemble depiction of the world after high level vision processing. It will spawn new forms of visual artistic expression and communication. In this talk, I will focus on Coded Photography. 'Less is more' in Coded Photography. By blocking light over time or space, we can preserve more details about the scene in the recorded single photograph. I will show several applications and describe emerging techniques to recover scene parameters from coded photographs.
Prof. Ramesh Raskar joined the MIT Media Lab in spring 2008 as head of the Camera Culture research group. The group focuses on developing tools to help us better capture and share the visual experience. This research involves developing novel cameras with unusual optical elements, programmable illumination, digital wavelength control, and femtosecond analysis of light transport, as well as tools to decompose pixels into perceptually meaningful components. Prof. Raskar's research also involves creating a universal platform for the sharing and consumption of visual media. Prof. Raskar received his PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he introduced "Shader Lamps," a
novel method for seamlessly merging synthetic elements into the real world using projector-camera based spatial augmented eality. In 2004, he received the TR100 Award from Technology Review, which recognizes top young innovators under the age of 35, and in 2003, the Global Indus Technovator Award, instituted at MIT to recognize the top 20 Indian technology innovators worldwide. He holds 35 US patents and has received four Mitsubishi Electric Invention Awards. He is currently co-authoring a book on computational photography. http://raskar.info
Abstract: Near-infrared spectroscopy and diffuse optical imaging
(NIRS-DOI) is a new technology. Because of its noninvasive nature, it arouses more and more scientists' interest to see if NIRS-DOI can be used to diagnose cerebral vascular diseases and women's breast cancer.
More and more papers has been published in this area.
Dr. Zhang has been engaged in scientific research of NIRS-DOI since 1998 and published more than 20 papers in this topic. Today, his talk will focus on the following issues:
1. Basic principle of Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) and Diffuse Optical Imaging (DOI);
2. aNIRS: ambulatory Near Infrared Spectroscopy; Current related projects and results; Towards ambulatory monitoring of cerebral vascular diseases; Dr. Quan Zhang joined Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Harvard Medical School as an assistant professor in 2007. Since 2004, he has been the director of two laboratories, i.e. Biomedical Optics Laboratory, the Center for Engineering in Medicine and Biomedical Engineering Laboratory, Neural System Group. He has also been the consultant in photon migration modeling in Intelligent Medical Devices,
LLC, Cambridge, MA, and the consultant in Near-infrared (NIR)
spectroscopy and imaging the director Advanced Research Technologies
Inc, Montreal, Canada. Currently, his group focuses on two areas:
1) Non-invasive fast optical imaging of visual and motor processing, which aims to non-invasively monitor neural activity using methods that may be suitable for functional brain imaging in populations with developmental disorders;
(2) Diffusion optical tomography (DOT) and fMRI studies of visual
perception and imagery, which conducts a systematic validation of the true potential and limitations of DOT as a cognitive neuroscience tool in adults by recording simultaneously DOT and fMRI data during established visual stimulation paradigms
Prof. Zhang received his PhD from Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1998. He holds at least 5 US patents.

demand ever more energy. While it still remains a lively debate how long fossil fuels, the major energy source we currently rely on, will last, people have already come to conclusions that the negative environment effect caused by burning fossil fuels is unacceptable. It thus becomes urgent to develop new technologies that can produce energy comparable to that based on fossil fuels, not only in magnitude but also in price. For long-term prosperity, renewable energy is apparently desired. Solar energy, therefore, stands out for obvious reasons. The development of solar energy conversion devices such as photovoltaic cells, however, is rather slow, albeit an old technology, mainly because of the combined high cost and low efficiency. Notwithstanding detailed difference, most energy related processes including charge separation, transport and recombination, are of characteristic distance of nanometer
scale. So, emerging nanomaterials with relevant length hold great promises in meeting the daunting energy challenge. I'll summarize recent development of energy related research using nanomaterials and present our efforts within this context. I'll share with you our
thoughts on how semiconductor nanowires may offer advantages in both
high efficiency and low cost. Our recent results will be discussed as

Dr. John Zhou, Lilliputian Systems
The ever-rising oil and gas prices and the demand for environmental friendly forms of power generation have led to a surge in the efforts in exploring and developing clean alternative energies. While solar, wind, and hydroelectric powers are among perhaps the most well known clean alternatives, fuel-cell technology is uniquely positioned to provide clean power for non-stationary applications such as motor vehicles. The recent advances in micro fuel cell technologies have offered the promise to eventually cut the cord off such devices as mobile phones and laptop computers. This talk is an introduction to fuel cells. The focus will be on micro fuel cells and technologies.
Dr. John Zhouhas over 15 year experience in design, process development, and fabrication of optoelectronic and MEMS devices. He graduated from the Department of Physics, Universityof Scienceand Technology of China, and received his MS from the Instituteof Semiconductors, ChineseAcademyof Sciences, and Ph.D in physical chemistry from University of Cambridge, UK. He is currently a senior process engineer at Lilliputian Systems, developing Si MEMS-based solid oxide micro fuel cells.

Every entrepreneur likes to acquire more customers. How do you achieve that goal? NECINA Entrepreneur SIG has the honor of having Dr. Wei Gao, a successful founder and entrepreneur to present the business model of his latest venture: USGroupDiscount.com.
Groupon created an exciting new business model, which leads them to build up a billion dollar company in less than 3 years. It broke the record in American history. Google offered them $6B to buy out and got refused. They are ready to go IPO at a value of $30B.
USGroupDiscount.com uses this successful model from Groupon to apply it in the Asian community. Groupon didn't create loyal customers, they don't have repeated business. But USGroupDiscount.com, on the other side, counts on the loyalty. In the past a few months, USGroupDiscount.comhad several merchants coming back to do deal again. USGroupDiscount.comcustomers are repeated customers. There are a few other areas that can be penetrated deeper into the market under this model.
In the talk, Dr. Gao will present their business model, their plan, and ideas to do a better and sustainable business.
After the talk, we will have a round table discussion on the topic of acquiring more customers, with everyone's participation, especially from our member owners of small business and entrepreneurs.

Time: 2:00pm to 5:00pm,Saturday, March 8, 2008
Location: Finisar Corporation (formerly Azna LLC), 36 Jonspin Road, Wilmington, MA 01887
Topic: Nanomaterials and Biosensors
2:00pm-2:30pmNetworking Time
2:30pm-2:45pmIntroduction
2:45pm-3:45pmLabel-free Optical Biosensors
Dr. Xingwei Wang, Universityof MassachusettsLowell
Abstract:A biosensor is a device for detection of the presence of an analyte. Biosensor design research, as an interdisciplinary topic, links biology with engineering closely. Problems associated with the established technique include the bulky size, high equipment costs, and time-consuming algorithms. Therefore, such systems are limited to research laboratories and cannot be applied for in-vivo situations.
In this talk, I will focus on two kinds of label-free optical
biosensors. One design is aimed at development of a sensor probe for direct detection of DNA sequences. Experimental results demonstrate sequence specificity and sensitivity to nanogram quantities of target DNA sequences with short (~5 min) hybridization time. The second design is a high throughput biosensing platform, which can be used for multiple
analyte simultaneous detection.
Dr. Xingwei Wangjoined the Department of Electrical and Computer
Engineering at UMass Lowell as an Assistant Professor in 2006. She got her Ph.D. and M.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and StateUniversity(Virginia Tech), Blacksburg, VA.She also got her certificate for future professoriate from Virginia Tech. Dr. Wang has authored or co-authored more than 20 journal and conference papers, and eight patent disclosures. Her current research interests include optical sensors for medical, chemical and
industrial applications; assistive technology program; nanoprobe design and fabrication; self-assembled nanostructures; optical biosensing and biomedical devices; optical imaging; MEMS technology and electromagnetic wave propagation. Her other research experience includes temperature, pressure, acoustic, strain, and chemical sensors. Dr. Wang won Paul E. Torgerson research excellence award for the 2005-2006 academic year at
Virginia Tech. Dr. Wang is a member of IEEE, OSA and SPIE. Also, she served as a reviewer of Applied Physics Letters.

4:00pm-5:00pmSynthesis, Fabrication and Self-assembly of Multifunctional Nanowires for Emerging Applications
Dr. Zhiyong Gu, Universityof MassachusettsLowell
Research and potential applications of nanomaterials and nanotechnology have been experiencing dramatic growth in the past decade. At the nanometer scale, many material properties may alter, for example, optical, mechanical, electrical, and magnetic properties. In order to enable nanotechnology to fully manipulate and utilize nanomaterials to make nanodevices, nanoelectronics, or nano-products in general, new assembly and integration strategies have to be developed or created since the conventional microfabrication process is approaching its limit in terms of size and cost-effective mass production. In this talk, I will present our recent effort in fabricating and assembling one of the most promising nano-building blocks ?nanowires (nanorods), and the assembly and integration of nanowires into ordered structures that may find various applications in emerging fields such as electronics and medicine. Electrodeposition in nanoporous templates has been used to synthesize multi-functional nanowires in the diameter range of 15-200 nm and length up 20 µm. Metallic, polymeric, and hybrid nanowires have been fabricated in very large quantity (10^9 -10^10 wires/cm^2 ) in this way. Several techniques will be described on how to assemble and integrate nanowires into ordered 1-dimensional (1D), 2D and 3D structures. In the end, examples will be shown how the strategies proposed above can be used for various applications.
Dr. Zhiyong Gucompleted his undergraduate studies at Qingdao Institute of Chemical Technology, China, in 1996. He received his M.S. from University of Notre Dame and Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buffaloin 2001 and 2004, respectively, all in Chemical Engineering. In April 2004, he moved to the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the JohnsHopkinsUniversity, working as a Postdoctoral Fellow until August 2006.
In September 2006, Zhiyong joined the Department of Chemical Engineerin at Universityof Massachusetts Lowellas an Assistant Professor. He is affiliated with the CHN/NCOE Nanomanufacturing Center at UML. His current research interests include synthesis of nanoparticles and nanowires, self-assembly and directed assembly, amphiphilic block copolymers, nanocomposite materials, and nanoscale integration for electronics, sensors and biomedical applications. Zhiyong has published 4 book chapters and over 20 refereed papers, and has about 50 presentations in national and international conferences and meetings.

Dr. Dunwei Wang, BostonCollege
Abstract:Continuous population increase and high living standards
demand ever more energy.
Our recent results will be discussed as
well.
Dr. Dunwei Wangis originally from Jiangsu Province, China. He moved
to Californiain 2000 to pursue his doctoral degree at StanfordUniversity. After working as a postdoctoral scholar at California Institute of Technology for two years, he recently joined BostonCollegechemistry department as an assistant professor. Wang's part research concerned Ge nanowires, a fast electronic material, and highly order arrays of Si nanowires as building blocks for logic gates. 4:00pm-5:00pm Introduction to Fuel Cells

9:00pm - 9:30pm Summary and Networking
Thomas Tongis the Senior Manager of Pfizer Global Contract Manufacturing Asian Region based in Singapore. He is accountable for leading and integrating cross-functional and cross-organizational project teams to implement sourcing and outsourcing strategies for APIs in Asian countries. Since Sep 2007, he is on developmental assignment in Pfizer Headquarters (NYC) implementing global Plant Network Strategy and Capture Global Advantage through product sourcing and outsourcing. Eng. in chemical engineering from the National University of Singapore.
Abstract:
"Opportunities and challenges: Pharmaceutical contract manufacturing businesses in Asia." With stricter regulatory norms, spiraling costs and increasing generic competition, more pharmaceutical companies are opting to contract manufacturing in order to achieve cost savings and productivity improvement. India and China are the two key countries in Asian region for pharmaceutical contract manufacturing businesses. This presentation will discuss the elements to determine vendor selection, the key phases to implement an outsourcing project and the key success factors in contract manufacturing business in Asia.
Dr. Roger Xie is the Associate Directorat Sirtris, a GSK company. Roger joined Sirtris in 2005 and currently oversees the Chemical Operations focusing onoutsourcing activities. Prior to Sirtris, Dr. Xie held various discovery and Medchem research and program management positions at Daiamed, UCB research and Sepracor Inc. Dr. Xie received his B.S. degree from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and his Ph.D. degree from Boston College. Dr. Xie has over 25 patents and publications in the areas of organic syntheses, medicinal chemistry and drug discovery.
Abstract:
Utilizing CROs in China to Create an Integrated Outsourcing Platform."The costs for drug research and development are high. As the demand for contained R&D costs continues to grow, the necessity of outsourcing and off-shoring is becoming of increasing importance. Besides reducing the cost of research, outsourcing in the pharmaceutical sector is a result of Pharma and Biotech companies rationing the internal existing facilities and capabilities. At Sirtris, we are exploring a variety of ways utilizing contract research organizations in China and other global territories to create an integrated outsourcing platform that lowers the cost, internal critical mass and time required to discover and develop new therapeutics.

Do you know the following recent stats and sound bytes?
- Career opportunities
- By 2018, the United States alone could face a shortage of 140,000 to 190,000 people with deep analytical skills as well as 1.5 million managers and analysts with the know-how to use the analysis of big data to make effective decisions.
- Business opportunities
- $600 billion potential annual consumer surplus from using personal location data globally
- Zynga, the maker of Farmville and other popular social games, says: "We're an analytics company masquerading as a games company." Big Data analytics is at the core of their business model.
- Additional stats
- 30 billion pieces of content shared on Facebook every month
- Nearly all sectors in the US economy had at least an average of 200 terabytes of stored data (twice the size of US retailer Wal-Mart's data warehouse in 1999) per company with more than 1,000 employees
In this age of information explosion, a company doesn't need to be a Fortune 500 to own and monetize from terabytes or petabytes of data; an individual doesn't need to be a Big Data professional to enjoy its benefits at work and in life.
Join us in this NECINA's first ever Big Data conference, where a group of remarkable speakers and panelists will cover:

Talk Abstract:
Innovation and economic growth cannot take place without the management of increasing large sets of data. Big data and the Big Data Stack present a new frontier for investors. From the scaling of data storage and processing to big analytics and finally to intelligent services based on big data, there is innovation happening up and down the stack. Jeff Fagnan will discuss the opportunities and challenges in early-stage investing in Big Data.
The Anatomy of a 21st century Big Data Analytics Platform
Legacy database technology falls short of storing and analyzing terabytes or petabytes of data. At Vertica, we have built a new analytics platform from scratch, dedicated for Big Data analytics. Join us as we walk through the design and implementation of our product, as well as some of the customer use cases and new business models enabled by Vertica's unique capabilities.
The Data Warehouse Platform at Trip Advisor
With over 200 million daily dynamic page views and 120 GB of compressed logs per day, TripAdvisor depends on a variety of technologies for storing, processing, and analyzing user interactions with our site. At the center of these technologies is Hadoop, Apache's framework for data-intensive distributed computing. In this talk, we will discuss how TripAdvisor uses Hadoop and associated projects like Hive, Oozie, and Sqoop in its data warehouse platform to process over 30 TB of data, expected to reach 100 TB within a year, and how we integrate with SQL Server for end-user reporting. We'll also describe some of the challenges with working with these new and bleeding-edge projects, and how we're able to do it all with a team of just three engineers.
The Evolution of Big Data Technolgy Stack
The definition of "Big Data" was fairly vague as recently as 36 months ago. Now any serious venture into the social network or media space requires the ability to manage big data in sophisticated ways, including the capability to deliver results with ever lower latency. Techniques that were cutting edge in 2008 are considered quaint now. Visible Measures has been a "big data" company since its inception in 2006. The purpose of this talk is to describe the key components of our data handling stack, and to describe how the stack has evolved to meet business demands over the past 4 years. Our approaches to data management and warehousing will be described. The talk will also argue that some of the most popular big data tools in common use now may not be the optimal way to move forward in a new venture.

2:45pm-3:45pm Advanced Support the Globe with Tiny Things: Sustainable Energy from Nanomaterials
Dr. Dunwei Wang, BostonCollege
Abstract:Continuous population increase and high living standards
demand ever more energy.
Our recent results will be discussed as
well.
His present interest centers on nanomaterial-based energy processes and applications. Wang is the recipient of the IUPAC Prize for Young Chemist in 2006.
3:45pm-4:00pm Break
4:00pm-5:00pm Introduction to Fuel Cells
