Every entrepreneur likes to acquire more customers. How do you achieve that goal? NECINA Entrepreneur SIG has the honor of having Dr. Wei Gao, a successful founder and entrepreneur to present the business model of his latest venture: USGroupDiscount.com.
Groupon created an exciting new business model, which leads them to build up a billion dollar company in less than 3 years. It broke the record in American history. Google offered them $6B to buy out and got refused. They are ready to go IPO at a value of $30B.
USGroupDiscount.com uses this successful model from Groupon to apply it in the Asian community. Groupon didn't create loyal customers, they don't have repeated business. But USGroupDiscount.com, on the other side, counts on the loyalty. In the past a few months, USGroupDiscount.comhad several merchants coming back to do deal again. USGroupDiscount.comcustomers are repeated customers. There are a few other areas that can be penetrated deeper into the market under this model.
In the talk, Dr. Gao will present their business model, their plan, and ideas to do a better and sustainable business.
After the talk, we will have a round table discussion on the topic of acquiring more customers, with everyone's participation, especially from our member owners of small business and entrepreneurs.
For questions or suggestions on NECINA Entrepreneur SIG, please send your e-mail to harry.gao@necina.org

"As cloud and web services advance further, the key to providing next generation personalized real time services lies in how to process an ever-increasing amount of data for user relevance in real time." -- Cheng Wu, Chairman & Co-Founder of Azuki Systems, NECINA board member
"A great conference to address one of the major waves affecting technology today." -- Jo Tango, Leading investor in Big Data and other areas, NECINA board member
"This is a very interesting program on Big Data for students and technologists to attend." -- Mike Stonebraker, Founding father and industry luminary in relational databases
Overview
Big Data is becoming a big deal! It is like air -- You may not be aware of it, but it's permeating everywhere, impacting all aspects of your work and life.
Do you work in the following industries, and know how Big Data has been transforming them: High tech, Financial, Telecommunications, Retail, Biotech, Healthcare, Marketing, Intelligence and home land security…
Do you use the following services for quality of life, and know how Big Data has been a key technology enabler: social networking, gaming, online recommendation of shopping, movie, travel, and apps...
Do you know the following recent stats and sound bytes?
- Career opportunities
- By 2018, the United States alone could face a shortage of 140,000 to 190,000 people with deep analytical skills as well as 1.5 million managers and analysts with the know-how to use the analysis of big data to make effective decisions.
- Business opportunities
- $600 billion potential annual consumer surplus from using personal location data globally
- Zynga, the maker of Farmville and other popular social games, says: "We're an analytics company masquerading as a games company." Big Data analytics is at the core of their business model.
- Additional stats
- 30 billion pieces of content shared on Facebook every month
- Nearly all sectors in the US economy had at least an average of 200 terabytes of stored data (twice the size of US retailer Wal-Mart's data warehouse in 1999) per company with more than 1,000 employees
In this age of information explosion, a company doesn't need to be a Fortune 500 to own and monetize from terabytes or petabytes of data; an individual doesn't need to be a Big Data professional to enjoy its benefits at work and in life.
Join us in this NECINA's first ever Big Data conference, where a group of remarkable speakers and panelists will cover:
- The exciting opportunities and new business models leveraging Big Data
- The new tools purpose built for Big Data
- The challenges and solutions in Big Data use cases
No background in Big Data is needed for you to enjoy the talks and panel discussion. You will also have the opportunity to network with the speakers, panelists and attendees, discussing how Big Data is impacting your career and life.

Talk Abstract:
Innovation and economic growth cannot take place without the management of increasing large sets of data. Big data and the Big Data Stack present a new frontier for investors. From the scaling of data storage and processing to big analytics and finally to intelligent services based on big data, there is innovation happening up and down the stack. Jeff Fagnan will discuss the opportunities and challenges in early-stage investing in Big Data.
The Anatomy of a 21st century Big Data Analytics Platform
Legacy database technology falls short of storing and analyzing terabytes or petabytes of data. At Vertica, we have built a new analytics platform from scratch, dedicated for Big Data analytics. Join us as we walk through the design and implementation of our product, as well as some of the customer use cases and new business models enabled by Vertica's unique capabilities.
The Data Warehouse Platform at Trip Advisor
With over 200 million daily dynamic page views and 120 GB of compressed logs per day, TripAdvisor depends on a variety of technologies for storing, processing, and analyzing user interactions with our site. At the center of these technologies is Hadoop, Apache's framework for data-intensive distributed computing. In this talk, we will discuss how TripAdvisor uses Hadoop and associated projects like Hive, Oozie, and Sqoop in its data warehouse platform to process over 30 TB of data, expected to reach 100 TB within a year, and how we integrate with SQL Server for end-user reporting. We'll also describe some of the challenges with working with these new and bleeding-edge projects, and how we're able to do it all with a team of just three engineers.
The Evolution of Big Data Technolgy Stack
The definition of "Big Data" was fairly vague as recently as 36 months ago. Now any serious venture into the social network or media space requires the ability to manage big data in sophisticated ways, including the capability to deliver results with ever lower latency. Techniques that were cutting edge in 2008 are considered quaint now. Visible Measures has been a "big data" company since its inception in 2006. The purpose of this talk is to describe the key components of our data handling stack, and to describe how the stack has evolved to meet business demands over the past 4 years. Our approaches to data management and warehousing will be described. The talk will also argue that some of the most popular big data tools in common use now may not be the optimal way to move forward in a new venture.
